Haven't had much to say. Well... that's a lie. A lot of blog-worthy stuff has happened, I just haven't posted anything. If that upsets you then, well, you need to get a life. This is, after all, just a blog, and not a very good one at that.

Here’s basically what you missed: School started. They have raised the bullshit level over there by around seven fold. I won’t go into individual things; I don’t want to piss myself off. If I didn’t care about being poor and homeless and whatnot for the rest of my life then I’d drop out. Keep in mind that I enjoy learning, and I used to like school.

I also got a new toy. A TV capture card for my computer. It works great until you try to record stuff. For some reason it isn’t recording sound. Somewhere there is a setting that I need to play with, but I don’t know where. Once I get it working it will be pretty cool.

There was something else I wanted to write about, don’t remember what though…

~~Jeff

Well, if you are smart then you downloaded Escape Velocity: Nova, and have been playing it. You may have noticed that you can't capture ships, and the main story lines stop half way through.

This is becasue you don't have the registered version. You have two options to get the entire game. You can either pay the game makers $30 bucks to send you a registration key, or you can go here. It's a great old game, that is only availible for the Mac. Not only that, but it was free. You could download it and play the full game for as long as you wanted. It didn't cost you a cent. The only catch was that a joker named Hector would hassle you periodicly if you didn't register (buy, for those of you who don't remember the days when demos were called shareware versions).

Well, to all you PC users out there, our day has come. I am realing looking forward to it.

After I play it, and see if it is as good as I remember the original being I will post a link to where everyone can go and download it.

Ok, my download is done. I have access to the blog, so I can make long winded replies to stuff in the zonkboard without wasting zonkboard space.

Tsuki, I understand what you are saying. Presets are boring, they make everyone's pages look the same. There is no creativity in a preset. However, you also have to keep in mind that blogs, especially those on blogspot, are designed so that both people with ton's of web authoring experience and people who have never even heard of HTML can use them with equal functionality. They even have link and formatting buttons to help people who know nothing of HTML. But people who know HTML can make a layout as simple or as complicated as they want. Heck, we can even set the thing to upload to a different server via FTP.

And BTW, I wouldn’t submit this thing until I get tired of it and make a new one. I don’t want a couple thousand people with the exact same layout as me.

Oh, and did you notice that I officially named this layout Pineapple Upside-Down Cake? Wonder where I got the idea for that…

And also, you might wanna take a look at the links.

Troy, I got your e-mail, but can’t reply. Maybe I'll test it is Kazaa's browser instead, it's basically IE.

I am confused. Blogger looks diffrent on this computer when I use mozilla... Maybe I need to get the newest version... I'll try that and get back to you.

Also, that computer I was trying to fix is now officially dead. I think the power supply died, and I could probably replace the computer for less than the cost of a new one, so it's gonna stay dead.

Here is where the problem lies. The layout I designed to use for my blog once I got the computer working is not blogger friendly. Not even a little bit. I will try to tinker with it to get it a little more blogger friendly, but I don't have high hopes for it.

We'll see what happens, maybe I'll get lucky.

~~Jeff

I just noticed a typo in my links. Adware and spyware are evil little programs. While not viruses, they are, in my opinion, the next best thing. The two types of programs are very similar. They both use system resources that could be better spent on programs that you actually want. When I say use, I mean hog. If your computer seems to be running slowly, and you have no idea why, then these programs could be to blame. They both have a nasty habit of generating pop-ups.

They also have differences. Adware tends to be poorly written, which means even more resource usage. It also means that they can make your system unstable. Spyware is meaner and eviler than adware. Adware only generates ads. Spyware also spies on you, collecting personal data on your PC and your habits. It uses this data to choose ads. The makers of the spyware will also sell this information.

Over all, these programs are not your friends, and unless you are crazy and/or stupid, you don’t want them on your computer. So, you ask, what is the solution, how do I get rid of these evil little buggers? Simple, use a program such as Ad-Aware to get rid of them. When I ran this program it removed 157 pieces of ad/spyware from my computer. There are other programs out there, which I have heard work better, but I have not used them, so I won’t comment on them.

Also, most file sharing programs are not your friends. KaZaA, for example, has over thirty pieces of adware and spyware. But Jeff, what if I want to download music, movies, software, and other crap illegally? Use a program like KaZaA lite. This is a stripped down version that adds some cool features, and does not have the spy and adware that the non-lite version has.

So, I bet you are wondering what made me write all this crap about ad and spyware. The simple answer is the 157 pieces of it that I found on this computer.

If you would like to get any of the programs that I talked about in this post then please use links below (I write 97.5% of my posts in Microsoft Word, and I am too lazy to make links in the main part of the post. I usually go back and put the links in after I finish writing, but I don’t feel like it right now.)

KaZaA Lite

Ad-Aware

Ok, I'm confused now. Because of this lack of posting this blog has gotten kinda behind. Lets see if we can’t catch every one up.

I have been working on the new template, and have it more or less where I want to. Actually, that’s a lie. In Internet Explorer it is more or less how I want it. In Mozilla it has issues. The page has a total of four frames. They are arranged something like this

-----------------------------
|...................................|
-----------------------------
|..........|........................|
|..........|........................|
|..........|........................|
-----------------------------
|...................................|
-----------------------------

The top and bottom frames have black bars. The top one saying ‘Final Beef: It’s what for dinner…’. The left frame is black as well and is a navigation frame. The right frame is white and is for text. The right frame moves independently of the other three.

Just a warning, I am about to digress.

I just tried to access the geocities page that I created for testing the new layout. It wasn’t there. I quickly discovered that yahoo decided to remove me from geocities without telling me or giving me any kind of explanation. Needless to say, I find that very annoying. Regardless of this I will keep using them because I have nowhere better to go. Plus, I am familiar with their uploading and file editing stuff, and don’t want to have to fight with a different service.

I am really hoping that I will to able to get that broken computer to work as a web server. It will be great to not have to worry about other people hosting my crap. It has a 1.6 gig hard drive, plus a CD-ROM, which means that I will have over one hundred times the 15 megs that geocities gives me. It will also mean that I won’t have to deal with ads or pop-ups, or any of the other bull-shit things that free hosting services make you put up with.

This blog will also be moving over. I hope to be able to work out some kind of remote publishing system. Worst-case scenario: I won’t be able to post from outside the house. The cool thing is I will be able to have stuff other than blog posts on the page. It should be neat.

Ok, I am done digressing for now.

Back to the page. I will be re-uploading it in a minute, and it should be up before I post this. And wha-la, it’s up. Here is a link http://www.geocities.com/final_beef/newtempindex.htm.

We have also gotten another kitten. She is the sister of the first kitten. Don’t have a pic yet, but when I take one I’ll put it up.

I’ve also gotten a DVD player, and have started to make VCDs (Kinda like a DVD on a CD-R that can only hold around 80 min. of video). So far I have the first three episodes of News Radio and Quantum Leap on VCD. I am also downloading the rest of Quantum Leap’s first season and have News Radio’s entire first season on my computer. When I get around to it I will copy most of the movies that I have downloaded to them as well.

On a related note if any one knows where I can get episodes of a TV show called ‘Sports Night’, could you please tell me where?

Let’s see here, is there anything else? I don’t think so. Well, maybe I’ll post something later.

~~Jeff

I am starting to get seriously fed up with my cable TV and my cable modem. Right now I am trying to watch a show on FX, and the picture and sound keep flickering out. Before this I was watching Law and Order on TNT. Horrible picture. That channel is always fuzzy. So is Sci-Fi, Comedy Central, and practically every other station that I actually watch. Not that I watch them all that much, it’s hard when the picture’s always crap.

I should feel lucky though, at least my internet is working. That’s a rarity.

Oh, and the show just ended. I switched to Cartoon Network. Guess what! Yep, the picture is fuzzy.

At least the internet is better than it used to be. When we first got it, it went out nearly everyday. The fact that it’s working is a breath of fresh air.

I’m starting to consider switching to Insight. So, if anyone uses Insight why don’t you go ahead and tell me how their service is.

~~Jeff

P.S. As far as the new layout goes, I think I know more or less what I what. I have got it more or less done, just with placeholders instead of the real text and graphics. Once I have everything working right I will put up a link to where I have it.

Also, I’m not gonna put it up until I get the computer fixed. Just thought I'd post about this old computer that I have decided to resurrect. It’s an oldie. It has a 133 MHz processor. Some kind of AMD creation, not totally sure what it is. I would check, but then I’d have to take off the fan and shine a flashlight in there and what not. As far as ram goes, I remember that it has a 6 in it, so it is either 16 or 64 megs. I’ll look next time I boot it up.

Oh, that’s another fun thing. When I booted the thing up for the first time I discovered that it wasn’t recognizing the hard drive, CD-Rom, or the floppy drive. The floppy drive is understandable because it doesn’t have one in it right now (it was salvaged a while back when a computer that at least pretends to work needed one). As for the CD-Rom and hard drive, soon after opening the case up, I discovered that they weren’t connected to anything. About two seconds later I discovered that the cables were in fact missing, presumably salvaged as well. So before I can get this thing working I am going to need to get new, or (most likely) used ones. I am about 95% sure that my uncle has some, so it shouldn’t be too hard. If I am lucky I will be able to get them this weekend, if not, and assuming he has some, next weekend. After I get the cables and figure out what else has been salvaged, all I need to do is get an OS of some sort onto it’s 1.6 gig hard drive, and it should run.

Over all, I expect that the thing should be up and running this time next week. After that is when it gets difficult.

So I bet you aren’t wondering, nor do you care why I am doing this, but I will tell you anyway. I am planning to buy a pair of networking cards and a small (4 or 5 port) hub. Using these I will turn this old piece of crap into a server/router thingy. Its main purpose will be to allow both of our computers to use the cable modem (right now we have one on cable and one on dial-up, so even though this thing will cost 60-70 bucks in hardware plus cabling to make, it should pay for itself in a few years.). If we feel like it we should also be able to use it to host files on the internet. Not gonna hold my breath on that one, considering the fact that we have the worst ISP on the planet. I swear the cable internet is out half of the time, but that’s a rant for another day.

If I can get this darned thing working then it should be pretty, if not, then oh well, worst case scenario: I break it worse. No big deal.

For those of you who would like to see some ancient (around 8 years old) computer technology, I will be posting some pics of the thing (inside and out) tomorrow… if I think about it. Some additional info on this thing will also come with the pics.

~~Jeff

Does anyone remember BBSes? Well, recently I discovered that there are tons of them still in operation, a lot of which can now be accessed via the internet. Lately I’ve been playing Legend of The Red Dragon (a really fun door game set in an RPG environment. It came out circa 1994) on a BBS called Homer's Hut. It doesn’t have as many door games as other BBSes, but it’s the only one I’ve found that doesn’t ask for stuff like your phone number and home address. I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t like to give that stuff out to complete strangers on the net.

In LORD (Legend of The Red Dragon) I play under the alias of DinAmarth. If you decide you want to play then send me a message in game. I’ll either help you get started out, or kill you, depending on how much I like you.

To get into the game go to the Door Game menu, then select RPGs. From there LORD. If you’ve used BBSes before then it should be pretty easy, if not, it might take some getting used to, but you’ll get the hang of it after a couple minutes.

~~Jeff

Oh, and if you play, then let me know who you are, either in game, or on the tag board. I tried to match the width to that of the tag board. It's set to 227. I did it by trial and error though, so It's probably off. I figured that if it matched the tag board then it would both take up less space and make the tag board look less huge in Internet Explorer. In Mozilla it is a little thinner than everything else, but I but since more people use IE (I think they do at least) I figured it would be better to have it right in that.

~~Jeff

Ok, lets see if we can't break this thing.

~~Jeff

Oh, and see those buttons on the front? Usually when I get on and post about things not working properly it's because I get on to post about something else, discover that something isn't working, then get distracted fixing it. Usually by the time I finish fixing whatever broke I don't feel like posting anymore.

But, just to make Big T happy I am going to brag about my new(ish) CD Player.

This thing is frickin' awesome. On the surface it is just an everyday cd player with a remote. But once you look in the manual you will discover that it will also read and play MP3's that burned to a data CD. That means that you can hold 700 megs of MP3's instead of just 80 minutes of music. Right now I have a CD in their with seven full CD's worth of music on it. Each CD is in its own folder. It lets you play the whole cd, or just a folder, which is cool.

Here is a link which describes many of it's features.

Here's one with a picture.

You're jealous, aren't you?

~~Jeff

My archives are at least pretending to work now. First of all, I'm sick. If I were one of the many paranoid idiots who populate this world I'd think that I have SARS. But nope, it’s just a cold. And it's just in time for all of my finals. Yay. That means that I don't get to take anything for it. The last thing I want to do is take my finals whilst doped up on decongestants and off-brand Niquil. Did I spell Niquil right? It doesn't matter.

Also, today was class day at my school. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, then it’s a two and a half hour long assembly where they list every scholarship that every senior got. They finished it off with us juniors getting ‘sworn in’ as seniors. It was really quite silly. It was also hot. The entire time I felt like I was either going to pass out or vomit. This could probably be attributed to the doughnuts and chocolate milk that my first period teacher decided to give us. It wouldn’t have been bad, except they were all I’d eaten all day.

Oh and did I mention that I have an obscene amount of accounting homework to do? Here is a little piece of advice to anyone who ever thinks about taking up accounting: don’t. You WILL end up killing yourself. I’m sure that it isn’t as bad when you are allowed to use computers, but when you do it by hand, and are mildly dyslexic, it can be a very unpleasant pastime. Of course I don’t know for a fact that I’m dyslexic, but when you can’t seem to make it through an accounting class without writing some numbers backwards, then you start to suspect.

Oh, and the layout of this blog somehow managed to get messed up without my messing with it. I’m getting ready to try and fix it, but it is probably going to be more trouble than it’s worth. Do I REALLY need archives?

Oh, I almost forgot to rant about my English final. The first half was strait off this standardized test that they are trying out. It wasn’t bad. I’m good at those things. The second part was the problem. This section was questions about things that we actually covered in class. I did great on about half of them, but the half that I probably missed was from the poetry unit. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against poetry (well, almost nothing, don’t get me started about certain poems about wheelbarrows). The problem with this unit was it was covered entirely in the form of poster projects presented by the class. Now I have two, well three, problems with this method of teaching:

1.) Teachers go to college for years to learn how to teach. Students do not, and therefore should not be expected to teach important concepts and facts to the class

2.) Poster projects are a waste of time. They stop being useful after elementary school. Explain to me how a piece of poster board with pictures of T.S. Eliot and Robert Frost helps anyone understand poetry.

3.) Like I said, students are not trained teachers. They have not been trained to present information an interesting and easily retainable form. We should not be tested over the material presented by students. Of course that assumes that you can even hear the soft-spoken presenters.

4.) I know I said three, but I kinda rambled with #3 and didn’t get to the point I was planning on making. A good number of the questions were not covered by anyone in my class. My teacher specifically said that she didn’t know which classes presented what information. All I can say to that is WTF?!? How do you put questions on a final when you aren’t even sure that the class has ever covered the information?

In closing I would like to sum up by saying that being sick sucks. Long pointless assemblies suck. Accounting sucks. And my English teacher is a stupid b|ich.

~~Jeff

P.S. I don't feel like messing with my layout right now. Maybe since it broke itself it will fix itself as well. I haven't really had anything worth posting. Oh well.

Lately I have been listening to band called They Might Be Giants. They are really good. I recommend them to any and everyone. Their music as well as their lyrics are exceptional. They are probably the only band I have heard that I can listen to non-stop for a prolonged period. They are also definitely the only band I have heard that I can just sit down and listen to without doing anything else, and actually keep entertained. They are probably best listened to on earphones. They make great use of stereo sound. Often when I am listening to them I stop what I'm doing and listen to how the music moves. It's really great stuff.

I think that everyone who reads this should log off their computers and go buy their album called “Flood”. It’s really good. I have read that many find their album “Apollo 18” to be their best, but I haven’t heard it, so I wouldn’t know. “Dial-A-Song” is also great. It’s one of those compilation things. I’m listening to it right now.

Btw, you might have heard their songs “Particle Man” and “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” of Tiny Toons and their song “Boss of Me” (or at least part of it) as the opening theme to “Malcolm in The Middle”.

If you feel like downloading some of their songs to see if you like them before you shell out some cash on the CDs, then I would recommend “Birdhouse in Your Soul”, “Dead”, and “New York City”. I personally like “Dr. Worm” and “Why Does The Sun Shine?”. Everyone might not like these. If you want to hear “Why Does The Sun Shine?” then try to get a live version. I like the live one a lot better. “Dr. Worm” is kinda odd and therefore may not appeal to everyone. It’s about a worm who plays the drums. I’m sure it’s a metaphor for something or another. Most of their songs are like that. At first they sound like they are about something really silly, but after you hear them a couple times you realize that they are about something else. The experts have this to say about what "Dr. Worm" means.
Ok, I’m done rambling about They Might Be Giants. But while I’m on the topic of music, does anyone remember that “Nations of The World” song that Yakko sang on Animaniacs? That was a great song.

Now I’m pretty sure that I am done rambling completely.

~~Jeff

Well, now that everything is (hopefully) up and running smoothly I guess that it is time for some real posting.

I'm sure that some of you are wondering about this blog's title. Well, I wasn't to use Ineffable as the title, but alas, that was taken. I put it into an anagram generater (which can be found here ). Final Beef was one of the things that came up. I kinda liked it so I went with it. I thought about "The Ineffable Final Beef", but that seemed a bit cumbersome, so I just went with Final Beef.

So uh, ya. Thats the story. Pretty boring, hu?

~~Jef

Ok, guess what!
